Three decades later, I’m proud of the business we’ve built, and especially grateful for the remarkable humans who work in the trenches with me to help shape Impact Communications every day.
From Solo Founder to Strong Team
Impact began as “me, myself, and I.” Over time, as clients began “seeing me everywhere” and referrals steadily grew, the firm expanded thoughtfully and intentionally. We hired for talent, integrity, discernment, and drive – never quotas, never optics.
Since this is Women’s History Month, I’ll focus on just this portion of the firm. Our women team members serve across strategy, media relations, client relationship management, operations, content creation, special projects, and financial administration. They are joined by an exceptional group of male and non-binary colleagues who share the same commitment to excellence and client service. Together, this team brings depth, balance, empathy, rigor, and resilience to everything we do. Dedicated. Discerning. Driven.
Our 3-D Framework – Dedicated. Discerning. Driven. – has guided us for decades.
During Women’s History Month, I see those values embodied in powerful ways:
Dedicated.
Women on our team consistently go above and beyond for clients and one another. They are steady under pressure, generous with their time, and committed to delivering meaningful results. They can go toe-to-toe with anyone else on the team – and are not afraid to speak up in challenging client conversations.
Discerning.
Discernment remains our key differentiator here at Impact Communications. It’s the ability to ask better questions, see around corners, and make thoughtful strategic decisions. Many of the women at Impact bring a natural blend of analytical thinking and emotional intelligence that strengthens client partnerships.
Driven.
Ambition at Impact is quiet but relentless. Our team members pursue mastery in their craft, invest in relationships, and embrace continuous improvement – what the Japanese call kaizen, the belief that change is good and growth is constant.
A Culture Where People Thrive
We were virtual before virtual was cool. That decision, made long before it became commonplace, allowed us to build a flexible, performance-driven environment where people can excel professionally while honoring personal commitments. Historically, that meant that women gravitated naturally to my firm, because I built my business to put families first while also doing serious and significant work for our clients – we don’t take those promises lightly, of course, but as we all know, life has a funny way of throwing curve balls into what might have been an otherwise normal workday. This is where bench strength and teamwork have saved us time and time again.
“Family first” has long been one of our mottos. That applies not just to my own family, but to the extended family of professionals who make up Impact Communications. We strive to create a culture where:
It is especially meaningful to see women thrive in leadership and strategic roles while balancing the many dimensions of life outside of work. Honoring the Women of Impact
This Women’s History Month, I want to recognize the women who contribute their expertise, insight, and energy to our firm. Each brings distinct strengths, whether in media strategy, client counsel, operational excellence, creative execution, or financial stewardship. Together, they elevate our firm and the clients we serve.
Looking Ahead
When I reflect on 30+ years in business (you can read more about that journey in my earlier reflection, “What Is a Successful Business? Reflections from 30 Years Well Spent”), I’m reminded that success is not measured only by longevity or revenue.
It’s measured by:
Women have played a central role in that story, and will continue to shape the future of Impact Communications alongside their talented colleagues. This Women’s History Month, I am grateful not just for progress made broadly, but for the extraordinary professionals here at Impact Communications who demonstrate every day what dedication, discernment, and drive truly look like. ~ Marie Swift, Founder and CEO, Impact Communications, Inc.
It’s a beautiful life and meaningful work when shared with bright spirits, nurtured and empowered by leadership, love, and commitment.
