Swift Chat with Frank Corrado: Humanizing Financial Advice in the Age of AI

7/7/2026

In this Swift chat conversation, Marie Swift sits down with Frank Corrado, a fiduciary financial advisor whose career has spanned public accounting, two decades at JP Morgan, over 20 years running his own independent RIA, and founder of Pivot Point, which partners with financial advisors and their clients as a "Chief Behavioral Officer" to help people move from insight to action at life's pivotal decision-making moments. Corrado shares the pivot points that shaped his path, from leaving Wall Street after 9/11 to earning his CFP, becoming a Registered Life Planner through the Kinder Institute of Life Planning, and now pursuing the Certification Financial Transitionist through the Financial Transitionist Institute.
Corrado highlights his new white paper, The Strategic Power of Humanization in Modern Wealth Management, which makes the case that the advisory profession is shifting from product and service-centric models toward a deeply human-centered practice. The conversation digs into the difference between personalization and humanization, why "soft skills" are in fact core skills, and how AI can free advisors to spend more time being guides rather than mechanics – without ever replacing genuine empathy and listening.

He also touches on the benefits of being a member of the Alliance of Comprehensive Planners (ACP) and how that methodology and community of like-minded financial planning and wealth management professionals has been an important part of his success.

Whether you're a financial advisor looking to deepen client relationships, build enterprise value, or simply rethink your value proposition in the age of AI, this conversation offers a thoughtful, experience-tested perspective on what it really means to put people first.

Summary of Conversation

The conversation centers on Corrado’s white paper, The Strategic Power of Humanization in Modern Wealth Management, exploring why the industry is shifting from a product- and service-centric model to a deeply human-centered one. Corrado distinguishes between personalization (gathering client data) and humanization (acting on it through genuine listening and presence), explains why AI should free advisors to spend less time as "mechanics" and more time as "guides," and discusses how missed conversations about family and relationships – not just money – often cost advisors their clients. He also shares hard-won lessons on timing, readiness, and conviction, the power of saying "I don't know," and the value of community and mentorship through organizations like the Alliance of Comprehensive Planners (ACP). The episode closes with practical takeaways advisors can apply immediately, including making unscripted check-in calls and benchmarking themselves against client expectations rather than technical outcomes.

Insights and Takeaways

Humanization, not just personalization, is the future of wealth management
  • Personalization is collecting client data (questionnaires, check-boxes); humanization is acting on that data through genuine, ongoing conversation.
  • Frank learned this when a longtime client revealed he wanted to leave finance for marketing — info that never surfaced because the intake form had no real space for it.

AI should free advisors to be guides, not mechanics
  • Frank cites Brian Portnoy's distinction between "mechanic" (technical execution) and "guide" (empathy and direction) — AI will increasingly handle the mechanical work.
  • AI can give you "all the details about the mountain," but it can't replace the empathy and judgment needed to actually guide a client up it.

Conviction matters more than timing or readiness
  • Frank mentions the old adage: "The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The next best time is today" — timing is about acting in the present, not waiting for a perfect moment.
  • Readiness isn't a fixed state ("you're more or less ready than you were yesterday"); conviction and passion are what make timing and readiness self-evident.

Relationships — not just portfolios — determine client retention
  • Frank notes the well-documented statistic that a large share of widows and adult children leave their parents' or spouse's advisor after a death, because the relationship was never built with them.
  • He recommends advisors actively capture and engage with a client's family tree (e.g., in their CRM) rather than focusing solely on financial milestones.

Saying "I don't know" is a position of strength, not weakness
  • Frank found that imposing his own answers on early clients consistently failed — clients already have the answers; the advisor's job is to help surface them.
  • Letting go of the need to "always be right" allowed him to shift from advising to true partnership with clients.

Soft skills are actually core skills
  • Frank reframes "soft skills" as essential, not supplementary — like a mountain guide who needs both technical know-how and deep understanding of the client's capabilities and goals.
  • Quality of listening and presence (e.g., staying silent in conversations to let clients keep talking) matters more than frequency of contact or canned touchpoints like newsletters and CRM-triggered birthday cards.
